덕수궁에 들어가기 위해 태평로의 상징인 대한문을 지난다. 하지만 원래의 위치는 아니다. 일제에 의해 태평로가 만들어지면서 덕수궁의 크기는 줄어들었고 대한문도 뒤쪽으로 물러났다. 1968년 태평로가 확장되면서 또다시 뒤로 물러나 지금의 자리에 있게 되었다. 괜스레 너른 태평로가 무심하다. 대한문을 지나 직진하면 중화문(보물 제819호)에 이른다. 덕수궁의 정전인 중화전 입구에 해당된다. 중화전 앞에는 품계석이 도열해 있다. 궁궐 내 목조중층 건물인 석어당도 주목할 만하다. 임진왜란 때 환도한 선조가 머물다 승하한 장소요, 인조반정 후 광해군이 유폐된 장소다. 물시계가 있는 보루각 자격루(국보 제229호)는 궁내 유일한 국보다.
